Exist in Photographs: My photoshoot by Rita Newmeyer

I had my own photoshoot experience and I was blown away. I have always talked about how important it is to have a portrait session for your self. I talk about how important it is to exist in photographs for yourself and your loved ones. I knew it was important, or at least I thought that I did.

When I sat and had my hair and makeup done and put on these glamorous dresses, I actually felt it. This experience is like nothing else.

And then, to make it even better, on the day that my folio came, I got to experience it all over again. I got to show my husband and son; my son was transfixed. I loved watching his little face light up when he looked at me and said, “Mommy, you look so pretty and happy.”

“Happy” That is why it is important. That is what he will remember from these photos. He won’t remember that I had wanted to loose weight before the shoot or that I was nervous about my arms or acne. He will remember that I looked happy. And, now, so will I.

When I booked my trip to the The Portrait Masters, I knew that I wanted to make the most of the trip. I stayed a few extra days, I booked a mentoring session and I booked my very own portrait photoshoot with a professional photographer that I had followed for years. Ashleigh of Ashleigh Taylor Portraits is just as wonderful in person as I thought she would be. She made the experience so fun, despite us all having to be up before the sun for the desert shoot. The images that she took are so beautiful and will be art pieces in my home for years to come.

I also made a parachute dress!

I had seen these amazing photo shoots using dresses made from silk parachutes and I became obsessed with having my own. I searched and searched and ended up finding this one that was a British parachute from the 60’s and it was PINK! It came out so beautiful and I am thrilled to have my own parachute dress portrait to hang on my wall. (dress tutorial coming soon!)

We also did some studio shots after. This black sequin dress was in the studio wardrobe and I loved it!

A lesson in perfection. by Rita Newmeyer

It was about this time last year that we were waiting and waiting to be home owners. We had found the perfect little house in my dream neighborhood and it was almost ours.

Now, like all houses that you buy, there was a list of things that we ( mostly me) wanted to change. Painting most, if not all, of the walls, redoing the kitchen,  redoing the laundry room, adding molding and a transom window. The list goes on and on and on. (Thanks, Fixer Upper 😂)

As we moved in and settled, we did a few things here and there, like paint and garden, but mostly we just enjoyed calling it home.

I get impatient a lot with all the changes I want to make and then I have to remind myself, none of it actually needs  to be done. I wanted the “perect” and “Instagram worthy” house and I started forgetting how lucky we are to have our little house in the first place.

I was having one of those “it needs to be pretty now” moments over the weekend and I tried to remind myself that it really doesn’t matter.

This is what matters.

I have had so many people ask for pictures of the house and I haven’t wanted to do a house tour because I felt like it wasn’t “ready”. I am currently working on a little house tour post, whether it’s “ready” or not.

I just want to create pretty things. by Rita Newmeyer

Sometimes I just need to keep busy with something creative. I have what I lovinlingly refer to as creative ADD. I am always in the middle of about 20 or so creative projects and I go back to them every so often.

This is my current project:

Now, I have not embroidered since I was about 12 and all I knew how to do was cross stitch. So this was a pretty big project to jump into.

But, that’s how I work. I decide I am going to learn a new creative outlet and I just jump. I love emercing myself into something new and the challenge of learning a new craft!

I have no idea how long it will actually take me or if I will even ever finish it, but I just want to make it for the sake of creating it.

What do you do to keep your creative brain busy?

Generation portrait Session- M Family by Rita Newmeyer

I was so trilled to be able to capture four generations of beautiful women! This was my favorite session to date!

I believe that it is so important for us all to exist in photographs. Your children want photographs of you, just as much as you want photographs of them. Give them the gift of memories that will last forever.
